Just How Safe Are College Campuses

To begin, lets take a look at some numbers.  According to the National Crime Victimization Survey (2002) some general characteristics of crime on college campuses are:

  • 41% of the offenders were thought to be using drugs or alcohol
  • 72% of the off-campus crimes occurred between 6PM and 6AM
  • 66% of the assaults were unarmed
  • 58% were committed by strangers.  With the exception being sexual assault

While these numbers provide a good overview, you are better served taking an hour or two to research what type of crime happens at your college.  Make sure you check with the local police department for accurate information.  Some colleges only report on-campus, not off-campus incidents.

Along with your research I would suggest taking a weekend to take a few self-protection courses.  Granted it is not the most thrilling material in the world, but it is one of those skills that comes in handy when the crap hits the fan.  Make sure your instructor is competent and not some wind-bag full of hot air.  Realize your best lesson would be how to recognize and avoid danger rather than how to fight your way out of a dangerous situation.
